What kind of supervision is there off court/field/course?

Our sports camps are one of the very few that actually employs two full sets of staff.  With the additional employees, our supervision is excellent.  The non-coaching staff’s top priority is engaging the campers in fun activities and keeping them smiling off court.  Camp directors and counselor staff live in the same dorms and on the same floors as the campers.

I’m concerned about my daughter staying in a dorm with boys around.  What kind of separation between boys and girls will there be?

This is a very common concern, especially for parents of teenagers.  We have two separate floors for boys and girls, with only one closely monitored stairwell between levels.  While boys and girls are allowed to visit each other’s rooms during limited free time, doors are always kept open and counselors are always standing by.  When the campers are in the dorms, we have dedicated staff members who are designated to each floor to supervise and “do floor duty.”  We know how teenagers are, and so we are always on our toes!

The brochure says that there are laundry facilities.   What if my child doesn’t know how to do laundry?

We do not expect our campers to all be familiar with using a washing machine and dryer.  Our staff will be more than happy to assist campers with their laundry.  Who knows, they may come home volunteering to do all the washes for the household!  The use of the laundry machines is provided at no cost.  Campers who do not have detergent can purchase it at the camp office for only 25 cents per scoop.

What kind of food do they serve in the cafeteria?

Stonehill College’s dining hall has a great variety of food to choose from, and does a good job of providing for any dietary needs a camper might have.  Hot dishes rotate every day; there is a fresh salad and fruit bar available at every meal, large cereal selection, cold cuts for sandwiches, and different pizza varieties.  No one has ever gone hungry!  Campers with peanut allergies should have no fear.  Peanut products are not used in the kitchen.  Additionally, the fine dining facilities at Stonehill College can accommodate campers that may have other special eating requests (ie. seafood allergies, etc).

How is supervision handled on field trips?

During our staff orientation, we go over very specific and detailed training regarding each one of our field trips.  Prior to leaving for a trip, counselors are assigned a group of campers that they are responsible for on that trip.  Groups can clump together (as they often do as campers make friends), but there is still one counselor whose focus is specifically on one group usually containing between 7 and 12 campers (this number varies with the number of campers going on a field trip and the type of trip).   Additionally, every camper will be paired with another camper as part of our safe “buddy-system.”  No camper is ever left on their own or unsupervised, regardless of their age.

How do lights out and wake up work?

After an intensive sports training session, and then playing hard on the fun field trips, campers are pretty beat by the time lights are out at 11:00pm.  (For our young campers between the ages of 8 and 10 lights out is at 10:30).  At 10:30, we ask everyone to report to their floors to start getting ready for bed, and at 11:00 all lights are out!  All dorm room doors are left unlocked, and our counselors routinely check on campers throughout the night. Between 7:30am and 8:00am (depending upon the schedule for that day) counselors will knock on doors, yell, sing songs, clap loudly, and generally do whatever it takes to get the campers up and ready for another fun-filled day!

What if my child needs medical attention during the night?

Our counselors sleep on the same floors as our campers, usually just across the hall!  They are easily accessible and will bring your child down to see the athletic trainer who also sleeps in Corr Hall.  There will never be a time when your child is left alone and unable to find someone to help them.  We also have a doctor on call at all times and we are located only 5 minutes from the hospital in case of an emergency.

How are roommates assigned? Can my child select a roommate if they know someone at the camp?

We assign roommates based on age.  For instance, we would never place an 11 year old in a room with an 18 year old.  If your child is friends with another camper, we always do our best to put them together if requested.  Please make note on your application about a roommate request.  Because of the large number of international campers, we can also usually accommodate requests for rooming American campers with foreign campers.

What are the bathrooms like?

Corr Hall has two large bathrooms on every floor. There are three showers, three sinks, and four toilet stalls per bathroom.  We have never had a problem with waiting for a shower or a toilet, every camper seems to get on their own routine.  The bathrooms are also cleaned every day by the dorm’s janitorial staff.  The shower stalls come with small changing areas to provide privacy.  We understand many of our campers have never used a common bathroom, but as with the laundry, by the end of their stay they will be total pros!

Can my child bring food or snacks?

Often our campers like to bring some of their favorite snacks from home.  And if they don’t bring it from home, they are likely to pick some snacks up during our weekly Junk Food Journey (short field trip to the local grocery store).  There is a small kitchen in Corr Hall that campers are allowed to use under supervision.  They are allowed to use the microwave and refrigerator only, and they may keep food in their room.  The only time kitchen use may be restricted is when we have a problem with campers not cleaning up after themselves. One of our top priorities is keeping Corr Hall neat and tidy.  We have a reputation of being a respectful and clean group, and that is one we would like to maintain.

Will my child be able to have their cell phone at camp?

We allow APPROPRIATE use of cell phones at the camp.  This means that cell phones are NOT allowed on the court/field/course, or after lights out.  Campers may use their cell phones during free time.  There are two phones on every floor which are there for campers to call home from.  You will also be given the extension of that phone so that you may call your child.

What kind of linens should I bring for my child?

The beds in Corr Hall (like most college residence halls) are extra long.  Two flat sheets or a fitted extra long sheet work well.  Linens, blankets, pillows are provided for a fee, but you are welcome to bring all of your own linens.

How much free time will my child have, and what do campers usually do with their free time?

While campers end up with a few hours of free time, it is actually amazing how busy everybody remains!  We have a ping-pong table, a large selection of movies to choose from, playing cards and games.  We seldom have a bored camper.
